Brazil’s Indigenous peoples are being the victims of a smear campaign launched on internet by religious organizations acting in the country, who accuse them of practicing regular acts of cruelty against their children. Public officials working at the National Indian Foundation (FUNAI) hear frequent complaints from the communities concerning indigenous children withdrawn from villages and hospitals, at birth or when brought in there to receive medical attention. With the pretext of saving them from a supposed death at the hands of their relatives, they are taken to adoptive homes or institutions run by these organizations, which request international support and donations for these children through the site http://apadrinhamento.atini.org/. In exchange for the sum received, they offer a letter with a photo and a profile of the “parented” child, transgressing thus the rights of moral preservation and protection of image, identity, autonomy, values, ideas and beliefs granted to Brazilian children by the Children and Teens’ Bill of Rights (Estatuto da Criança e do Adolescente). The frequency of complaints coming from relatives of indigenous children taken from their families and the reported presence at the elementary schools in Brasilia of indigenous children from various origins who do not speak Portuguese suggest that illegal and unjustified adoptions of indigenous children coming from many regions of the country are numerous. As part of the smear campaign, a film was released on YouTube page http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=st48Tdd9Sz4 called Children buried alive in the Amazon – HAKANI, which shows the make believe burial of a live child without warning the public on the site that this is not a documentary film but a performance, with hired actors and actresses. This web page was accessed by hundreds of thousands of viewers and was severely criticized by Human Rights organizations, such as Survival International in its internet page http://www.survival-international.org/informação/hakani.All this seems to aim at one end: to approve a bill before the Brazilian Congress that, invoking the purpose of “save the children”, will facilitate keeping watch over Indian communities and their way of life and intervening into the heart of villages’ daily life. This law, if sanctioned, will allow for direct surveillance and indiscriminate access by strangers into areas which up to now have been well shielded from contact with non-Indians, and open the way for destruction of the most diverse aspects of these peoples’ life, including their well known service of protecting the environment for the benefit of all humankind.
We therefore ask all those who recognize the value of a diverse world, able to shelter and provide for a wide variety of modes of existence, to sign the Petition presented by a committee of indigenous delegates at the Human Rights Commission of the House of Representatives of the Brazilian Congress on April 17th. The document delivered at the Congress can be read on the web page of the PETITION ONLINE: http://www.petitiononline.com/mod_perl/petition-sign.cgi?14GATOS
